Ep 39. Dr. Mahaletchumy from Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre
*Note: After release of the episode Dr. Maha contacted us to inform that there was a factual mistake in one of her statements about product-based vs process-based. She used Canada as an example stating the country’s regulations are based on process-based. She intended to say that it is actually product-based. As that change did not impact the context of the conversation we did delete that section in order to prevent the spreading of misinformation.
What It’s About
Dana Blouin speaks with Dr. Mahaletchumy from the Malaysian Biotechnology Information
Center. She is a science communicator and educator. The conversation is about the
advancements in biotechnology as well as debunking some of the myths and pseudo-science
that’s out there. The Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC) is a not-for-
profit organization dedicated to building public understanding of biotechnology. In the past
one decade, with its various outreach programmes and a broad spectrum of target audience,
MABIC has positioned itself as the sole biotechnology communicator in Malaysia.
MABIC organizes a variety of activities targeted at specific stakeholders in and around
Malaysia to promote mutual understanding, engage the masses and inspire the next
generation to embrace the potential of biotechnology. Its strong linkages and collaboration
with universities and government agencies serves as MABIC’s key strength in successfully
creating public understanding of biotechnology.
Its recent flagship project, the Petri Dish, is Malaysia’s first science newspaper to further
promote science & technology among stakeholders from all walks of life.
